You know what you want to offer and for whom. Then comes the question that many organisers get stuck on: when do you do it? The period you choose determines more than just the temperature. It determines whether you can work outside, how busy the surroundings are, how easy it is for people to take time off and what your hour-by-hour programme looks like.

Below, we list what you can expect on the Costa Brava per season, and what that practically means for the type retreat you are organising.

The climate in figures

Mas Corazón is located near Tordera, slightly inland between the sea and the hills of Montnegre. During the day in summer, it is often a fraction warmer here than directly on the coast, whereas at night it cools down a little further. That difference works to your advantage: the evenings remain bearable.

The long-term averages for the Costa Brava:

Month During the day ’At night Sun per day Rainy days Seawater
January 13° 3° 5 o'clock 9 13°
February 14° 4° 5 o'clock 9 13°
March 16° 5° 6 hours 10 13°
April 17° 7° 6 hours 10 14°
May 21° 11° 7 o'clock 8 17°
June 25° 15° 8 hours 6 20°
Juli 28° 18° 9 o'clock 4 23°
Augustus 28° 18° 8 hours 5 25°
September 25° 16° 6 hours 8 23°
October 21° 11° 6 hours 7 20°
November 16° 7° 5 o'clock 9 17°
December 14° 4° 5 o'clock 9 15°

The highlighted months are the period during which we recommend the glamping tents.

Spring: March, April, May

March and April are changeable. Fine days alternate with rain, and the tramontana can really drive down the apparent temperature. The landscape is at its greenest and the surroundings are quiet.

From the end of April and certainly in May, it turns around. Seven hours of sun a day, temperatures around twenty degrees, and enough warmth to sit outside without the heat dictating your plans. The sea water is still fresh then, so don't count on swimming as a regular activity.

Suitable for: walking retreats, creative weeks, team sessions with heavy work during the day, anything where you want to be able to move around all day.
Please note: Semana Santa, Spanish Holy Week, is a real holiday week here. In 2027 it runs from 20 to 29 March inclusive. The surrounding area and the roads are busier then.

Early summer: June

For many organisers the most wonderful month. Around 25 degrees, eight hours of sunshine, few rainy days and a twenty-degree sea that already feels like swimming. The long evenings give you room for an after-dinner session in the last of the light.

Catalan schools remain in the school year until the end of June, running until 21 June in 2027. Consequently, the first half of June is noticeably quieter than the second half.

Suitable for: yoga weeks, ceremonies, women's circles, corporate offsites looking for connection and fresh air.

Midsummer: July and August

Warm, dry and sunny, with sea water that reaches 25 degrees in August. At the same time, this is the period when the heat dictates your schedule. Intensive yoga or breathwork in the middle of the day does not work well. You shift to the early morning and the evening, and keep the middle of the day free for rest, shade and water.

Furthermore, August is the quintessential Spanish holiday month. The coast is full, the beaches are full and Barcelona is busy. On the masía itself you hardly notice this, but you plan excursions to the coast or the city with care.

Suitable for: family weeks, quiet summer retreats with plenty of free time, programmes with a morning and evening rhythm.
Less suitable for: robust day programes and everything that requires cool concentration.

Indian summer and autumn: September and October

September holds onto the summer without the crowds. The Catalan school year begins on 8 September, so from then on the area empties out while the water is still 23 degrees. The air is softer, the light warmer and the vineyards and olive trees are heading towards harvest.

October is an underestimated month. Twenty-one degrees during the day, a twenty-degree sea, quiet walking trails. It is the time when showers can occur, so make sure your programme can also run indoors.

Suitable for: virtually everything. Silent retreats, yoga, burn-out recovery, leadership weeks. For many organisers, September is the best balance between weather, peace and availability.

Winter: November to February

Mild compared to the Netherlands, but not outdoor weather. During the day around 13 to 16 degrees, at night it can drop towards freezing. Five hours of sunshine a day and regular rain.

That doesn't make winter unsuitable, but rather a different type of retreat: turned inwards, with warmth, food and stillness as its pillars. The house has gas heating and an open fireplace, so inside you are comfortable all year round. Gathering around the hearth fire in January is a scheduled activity that is useless to you in July. Anyone staying here with a small group will experience a peace and quiet that you simply don't get in June.

And your participants' calendars?

The weather is only half the story. The other half is whether your people can get there.

For Dutch participants without children, May, June, September and October are the easiest. If your target audience is in education or travelling with a family, you are tied to the Dutch school holidays and end up in July and August. Something different applies to businesses: the summer months are often ruled out there due to holiday rotas, making June, September and October the realistic windows.

Remember to factor in the lead time as well. There is a gap between the moment you announce your retreat and the day people actually schedule time off and book flights. Work backwards from your desired date: when do you want to be fully booked, when does registration open, when do your programme and pricing need to be finalised, and when do you secure the venue.

Would you like some help thinking about your data?

One thing from experience: May, June, September and October fill up the fastest with us. If you want to be there during those months, make sure you book in good time. The rest of the year is at least as nice and you have more flexibility with your dates.

Dorien lives and works here all year round. She knows what a day in June feels like compared to a day in October, which periods in practice work best for which type of group, and which weeks in our diary are still available.

Hesitating between two periods, or want to know if your programme suits the season you have in mind? Pitch it to us. We are happy to brainstorm, even if you are right at the very beginning and there is no date set yet.

What is the maximum size of your group?

Just to cover the practical side, as this question usually comes up straight after the date: how many people can you bring?

How many people can sleep here?

Fifteen people can stay overnight in the masía. With the glamping tents included, that makes twenty.

In the masía

15 people

7 double bedrooms and 1 single bedroom. Gas heating and an open fire, so it is warm even in the middle of winter.

With the glamping tents

20 people

The same 15 beds in the house, plus 5 sleeping spaces in the tents: 2 doubles and 1 single.

The tents stay up all year round. Whether you use them is entirely up to you, though we recommend them from May to the end of October. Check availability post info@mascorazonretreat.com, then we will help you think it through.
